Clashes erupted in and around the Sclessin stadium before and after the Pro League match between Standard and Charleroi on Saturday night.

Police spokesperson Benoît Ferrière confirmed reports that one arrest was made and two officers were slightly injured.

25 minutes prior to kick-off, a group of Charleroi supporters infiltrated the section set aside for Standard fans, having successfully bypassed a door separating the two blocks.

This sparked panic and fights as smoke bombs were seen inside the stadium.

Post-match chaos: attacks and responses

Social media footage shows pyrotechnics, including flares, emanating from the stands.

The violence persisted even after the game, with Standard supporters attempting to enter a car park reserved for away fans, ready for further confrontations with Charleroi supporters.

Smoke bombs were used against police officers, who deployed a water cannon in response. One of the buses transporting Charleroi fans was targeted by projectile throwing, which resulted in a broken window, the spokesperson added.

After the incident, police announced it would review the stadium’s CCTV footage, in order to identify the perpetrators of these acts of violence.
