A 21-year-old man lost consciousness following a pre-dawn attack on Wednesday in Leuven's Oude Markt.
Local police have confirmed reports carried initially by various media outlets that they have arrested two teenagers aged 17 and 18 in connection with the attack.
The incident occurred at around 3:30 a.m. on Wednesday. For unknown reasons, the two teenagers assaulted the man, who fell to the ground, suffered a head injury and lost consciousness. Relevant CCTV footage has been analysed by the police, while the man was taken to hospital for treatment.
“Shortly after, our patrol managed to identify and apprehend the two suspects,” said police spokesperson Marc Vranckx. “Both young men, aged 17 and 18, have been taken in for questioning.”
Police investigations are ongoing. In addition to potential legal penalties, the suspects could also face banning orders, the police added.
