A fire broke out on Tuesday afternoon in a temporary pavilion next to a Belgian postal (Bpost) sorting centre in Antwerp’s harbour area, according to the Antwerp Fire Brigade.

The incident took place on Noorderlaan, prompting the evacuation of around 400 Bpost employees who were present at the sorting centre. The situation is now under control.

The pavilion, a temporary expansion of the sorting centre, caught fire at about 14:45. There were concerns the fire might spread to the main building; but the danger was averted, albeit, all the workers were evacuated as a safety measure.

The cause of the fire and the extent of the damage are currently unknown.
