The Carrefour supermarket chain will gradually remove PepsiCo products, such as Lay's crisps and Pepsi soft drinks, from its shelves in Belgium as it finds their prices "unacceptable," the company said.

Following talks with PepsiCo, Carrefour decided that the desired prices are "unacceptable," Carrefour Belgium confirmed after reports by La Libre Belgique. "Despite numerous attempts to reach a balanced agreement, there is currently no agreement between the two parties."

Carrefour has therefore decided to remove several brands such as Lay's, Quaker, Pepsi and Doritos from its shelves, starting from Thursday. The decision follows a similar move by Carrefour France. The rate at which products disappear from the shelves depends on the stock available in the shops, but the products are disappearing systematically.

In French Carrefour shops, a note stating that "we no longer offer this brand due to an unacceptable price increase" is being attached to shelves from Thursday, Reuters reports.

Carrefour Belgium said it "wants to protect the purchasing power of customers in all circumstances," adding that this commitment may lead to the temporary removal of products from certain suppliers' shelves.

No date has yet been set for resuming talks with PepsiCo or for offering the products again.
