An investigation into the decisions taken by the Conference of Mayors in Brussels has been called for by Brussels Parliament MPs for N-VA, Mathias Vanden Borre and Karl Vanlouwe.
The N-VA politicians have approached the Commission for Access to Administrative Documents (CTB), alleging that this bi-weekly consultation is a sort of shadow government significantly influencing regional policy while bypassing democratic control.
The Conference of Mayors is an informal association without legal obligations, including transparency. Vanden Borre has raised concerns by claiming the Conference disregards the existing transparency obligations.
"Discussion between local governments is essential; however, this so-called ‘shadow government’ significantly impacting regional policy, is a problem," Vanden Borre said.
In October, Vanlouwe was told during the Ganshoren City Council that the city government was forming a partnership with Child Focus, following a decision by the Conference of Mayors in May 2023. Concerned, Vanlouwe asserts: "I have nothing against collaborating with Child Focus, but the evidence here showed decisions were being made outside the overview of relevant democratic bodies."
Vanlouwe believes a favourable response from the CTB may be feasible, while Vanden Borre believes the result of the appeal could have significant ramifications. Last month, he unsuccessfully requested the 2022 activity report from the Conference.
"If we win this case, other related documents on decisions made in Brussels must also be shared. This will compel mayors to finally step out of the shadows," claims Vanden Borre.
Past conspiracies against the Conference have been made by N-VA, often dismissed by the mayors.
