The provinces of Liège, Hainaut, Namur and Luxembourg are on orange alert for slippery conditions from early Wednesday through to Thursday, the Royal Meteorological Institute warned in an alert issued on Tuesday.

Patches of ice are expected to create slippery conditions on roads in these provinces, especially on surfaces dampened by rainfall, according to the IRM, which also forecasts snowfall across these areas.

Walloon Brabant and Brussels are on yellow alert, the IRM added.

Significant snowfall, expected from France, will cross Belgium on Wednesday. It will be relatively limited in Flanders and Brussels, with depths of 1 to 5 centimetres anticipated. However, large quantities of snow, ranging in depth from 10 cm to 30 cm in places, are expected in the area stretching from Beaumont in Hainaut to Saint-Vith in Liège province.

“Between the north of this axis and the language border, we expect 3 to 8 centimetres of snow. South of this axis, sleet, rain or freezing rain will be common before also transforming into snow on Wednesday evening,” the IRM predicted.

The area of precipitation should leave Belgium by Thursday morning. “Over the entire episode (until Thursday morning), nearly 30 to 40 millimetres of precipitation will have been observed in the extreme south of the country,” the meteorological institute forecasts.

The orange alert for slippery conditions remains in place until Thursday morning. The affected provinces will then join Walloon and Flemish Brabant, Limburg and Brussels on yellow alert until midday on Thursday.
