For the first time in Belgium, over half of all bike sales (51.2%) were electric models in 2023, according to an estimate by the mobility federation Traxio.

After a record-breaking year in 2022, overall bicycle sales have seen a decrease, selling 606,017 units – a 12.9% drop. However, this total still surpasses pre-pandemic figures.

"The Belgian bike market is experiencing steady growth following the disastrous Covid-19 period," explained Traxio's spokesperson Filip Rylant.

After a brief shortage, there was suddenly an excess of bikes in stock last year. This led to retailers offering discounts. "We are now once again in a healthy situation with a good balance," Rylant noted.

There was a significant surge in electric bike sales last year. One reason for this could be that more people were using bikes for their commute to and from work.

However, the trend towards electrification also extends to leisure. Traxio's data shows a 73.5% increase in electric racing bike sales from 4,697 in 2022 to 8,154 last year.
