The King and Queen welcomed several European Union institution representatives to the royal palace in Laeken this Tuesday, marking the beginning of Belgium’s presidency of the EU Council with a New Year reception.
The Head of State extended his New Year wishes to over 200 guests, including the President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola, the Vice-President of the European Commission Margrethe Vestager, and several European Commissioners such as the Belgian Didier Reynders, alongside MEPs like Hilde Vautmans and Benoît Lutgen.
The Chief of Defence, Admiral Michel Hofman, was also among the invitees.

In his speech, King Philippe referred to Belgium’s EU Council presidency: "Together with our government and all Belgian authorities, we see this presidency as a unique opportunity to unite people and achieve results."
"Dialogue and consensus-seeking are part of Belgium’s DNA, and we will use these assets to promote democracy, prosperity, and human well-being in Europe and across the world," emphasised the sovereign.
Before the ceremony, King Philippe held a private audience with the President of the European Parliament.
