The 69th Brussels Art Fair (BRAFA), which opens on Sunday, will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Surrealist movement, with the works of Belgian artist Paul Delvaux featuring prominently.

Encompassing a wide spectrum of specialties, the fair is expected to host 132 galleries from 14 countries in Palaces 3 and 4 of Brussels Expo. It runs until 4 February.

Visitors will have the chance to appreciate an extensive range of art and artefacts, spanning from antiquity to contemporary art. The diverse offerings will include classical archaeology, ancient, modern and contemporary paintings, Asian art, and tapestries.

BRAFA Vice-President Francis Maere highlighted the fair’s unique approach. “Given the bustling nature of today’s art market, it can often be challenging to find one’s bearings," he said. "Brafa distinguishes itself from other fairs with its commitment to quality.”

The guest of honour for this edition of the fair is the Paul Delvaux Foundation, which will curate an exhibit dedicated to the major milestones of Paul Delvaux, who was associated with the Surrealist movement.

“In 2024, we will celebrate the centenary of Surrealism. With this in mind, the Paul Delvaux Foundation wished to honour the great Belgian painter, Paul Delvaux, to commemorate the 30th anniversary of his passing," Brafa President Harold t’Kint de Roodenbeke explained.

"International press and foreign observers often label Belgium as Surrealist, a term which appears to fit perfectly with our often quirky modus operandi," he added.

The Brafa Art Talks will feature a conference devoted to the Belgian painter on 30 January.
