'Brussels by Night' director receives lifetime achievement award

Flemish director, screenwriter, professor and journalist Marc Didden, at 74 years of age, received a Lifetime Achievement Award for his extensive career.

Didden will be awarded the prestigious accolade at the Ostend Film Festival, and an honorary star bearing his name was fixed on the Zeedijk promenade.

Didden was a rock music journalist for the Flemish magazine HUMO for many years before he started directing movies in the 1980s.

Didden gained notoriety for his films Brussels by Night (1983) and Sailors Don’t Cry (1989).

In 2022, he penned a book, Over cinema, offering his personal insight into the world of motion pictures and his love for the medium.

To honour him, his road movie Istanbul (1985) will be screened during the festival, which began on Friday 26 January and will end on 3 February.
