Many holidaymakers turn to foreign websites in the hunt for cheaper deals. But the allure of savings raises the risk of compromises to safety and legal protections, with a recent investigation revealing the potential pitfalls for travellers.

Booking through foreign websites can indeed offer financial advantages, particularly due to variations in school holidays and high seasons in different countries, legal travel expert Bert Wyseur told VRT News. But Wyseur stressed that cost savings can often come without the same protections of booking through a Belgian or European company.

In Europe, people purchasing package holidays benefit from robust legal protections, enshrined within EU directives that ensure uniform rights for consumers across Member States. Regardless of whether a package holiday is booked through a Belgian or foreign website, travellers are entitled to the same safeguards.

However, the situation becomes more nuanced for those opting to independently book flights, accommodations, or other travel services. Individual arrangements fall outside the scope of the Package Travel Act, with consumers bound by the laws of the country in which the purchase is made.

Wyseur warns that while protections may exist, those who have recourse to the terms and conditions if things go wrong often struggle when international transactions were made. To further complicate matters, language barriers and differing consumer regulations pose challenges.

Travellers should be wary of package deals offered by platforms like Booking.com, Expedia, or airline websites. Despite consolidating various travel components, these arrangements may not qualify as package holidays under the law, potentially leaving travellers with limited legal recourse in case of issues.

In essence, while booking through foreign websites can yield financial benefits, travellers must weigh these against potential legal risks. Wyseur calls for greater transparency and awareness among consumers regarding their rights and the legal frameworks governing their travel arrangements. By staying informed and discerning, travellers can navigate the complexities of international bookings with greater confidence and security.
