Sport Vlaanderen's centre in Zemst (Flemish Brabant) is going to be rebranded as the 'Flemish Centre of Excellence', boasting the largest swimming pool complex in the region.

The plans form part of an overall upgrade of four Sport centres in Flanders, for which the Flemish Government is now setting aside €10 million annually, Flemish Minister of Sport Ben Weyts announced on Saturday.

The construction in Zemst will commence in early 2027, with the other centres located in Bruges, Herentals, and Hasselt.

First Olympic-sized pool in Flemish Brabant

Zemst will be the home of the first Olympic-sized swimming pool in Flemish Brabant. The facility will be 50 metres long and 25 metres wide, with at least ten lanes.

This is an amenity not previously available in Flemish Brabant. Other provinces such as West and East Flanders and Antwerp, however, do offer similar facilities.

In addition, the Zemst complex will feature a 25-metre-long training pool equipped with an integrated camera system for under-water movement analysis, whilst seating areas and an advanced timekeeping system will also be on offer.

The Flemish region will work together with Zemst and Boortmeerbeek municipalities to complete the project, both of which will contribute financially. A private-sector partner will also be selected to oversee construction, maintenance, and operations for up to 30 years.

The search for the most suitable private partner will commence following the green light from the Flemish government.

"The pool complex will cater to everyone – locals, schools, local clubs, casual visitors, and top-level swimmers. It will provide a significant boost to our swimming sport," Weyts commented.
