The Itzulia Basque Country cycling stage race on Thursday took a grim turn as three of the sport's superstars were wiped out in a high-speed crash.

The Belgian former World Champion Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-Quick Step), Primoz Roglic (BORA-hansgrohe), and Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike) all suffered a heavy fall in the fourth stage of the tour.

The injury occurred 36km before the finish line on a downhill stretch. Evenepoel, leading the pack, misjudged a corner, landing in the grass. His team Soudal Quick-Step confirmed on Twitter that “He has been taken to the hospital for checks.”

Roglic and Vingegaard were slightly further back in the pack. Roglic (who had been in the race lead) appeared to walk away from the incident but Vingegaard was left lying immobile. Several ambulances quickly attended the scene and all three riders withdrew from the race.

Wednesday’s stage winner, Quinten Hermans (Alpecin-Deceuninck), also fell. After the accident, race officials paused the event to allow medical teams to intervene.
