A police officer died in a traffic accident during a pursuit in Couillet (Charleroi) on Thursday night, the Charleroi Public Prosecutor's Office confirmed on Friday.

A police car was involved in an accident in the Rue de Gilly in Couillet last night around 02:00, as two police officers were chasing a suspicious vehicle.

"The chase started at the roundabout on the Rue de Phillipeville (N5) in Loverval. After a bend in the Rue de Gilly, the driver of the police van lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a façade," the Charleroi Public Prosecutor's Office said.

The passenger, a police officer born in 1989 who had been in the service for 12 years, was killed instantly. The driver is in hospital with several fractures and has already been questioned. No suspects have yet been identified.

According to the Public Prosecutor's Office, the two colleagues were dealing with a traffic accident and had not called for reinforcements during the chase. "There appears to have been no direct contact between the fleeing car and the police vehicle."
