It took a lot of time and effort, but the Brussels Parliament finally approved its "lease ordinance" last week – meaning important changes for both tenants and landlords will soon be taking effect in the Capital Region.

The work on the reform started in 2021 by Brussels State Secretary for Housing and Equal Opportunities Nawal Ben Hamou (PS), who aims to guarantee decent and affordable housing by ensuring greater security for tenants and fighting illegal evictions.

"These changes will strengthen access to and retention of decent housing for tenants, at an affordable rent," Ben Hamou wrote on social media. "This will clear up many grey areas which give rise to problematic situations."

From regulating rent increases, deciding if tenants can have pets, and setting a framework for deposits and protection against evictions, the  most important changes can be found here.
