With two months to go before the elections and with disinformation destabilising democracy, the publishers of the French- and German-language daily press, brought together under the umbrella of Lapresse.be, are launching a multimedia campaign.

The objective is to remind people of the fundamental role of quality information. "Faced with rumours, propaganda and disinformation, journalists check the facts, cross-check sources and expose manipulation", the organisation pointed out in a press release published on Friday.

Journalists also "enable us to take a step back. They analyse the data, question the players and nuance the debates in the face of confronting extremes and increasingly polarised discourse", it added.

The campaign, entitled "The daily press, more essential than ever", will be launched on Monday 8 April and will be visible for at least two weeks on various media (dailies, magazines, audiovisual media, websites, cinemas, etc.).

The French- and German-language daily press distributes more than 55 million newspapers every year, reaching almost 2,500,000 readers. Its 500 or so employed journalists and numerous freelance contributors are bound by ethical rules to guarantee quality information to the people.

The mission of journalists is linked to values such as independence, freedom of expression, and the right to information, as well as intellectual honesty, nuance, and social responsibility.
