B-FAST, Belgium’s international aid organisation, is modernising its strategic vision to adapt to evolving global challenges.
The number of international emergencies is escalating due to frequent conflicts and natural disasters, says the Belgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
With its increasing professionalism, B-FAST, the coordinator of Belgian international aid, has developed a new strategy to align its operations with current and future issues.
As part of the new strategy, a B-FAST operation can now extend from 10 days to three months, a necessary amendment considering the growing complexity of crises. For instance, in February 2023, B-FAST set up a field hospital in Turkey, which had been devastated by earthquakes.
Further, B-FAST experts can now work in vulnerable countries, not just to manage crises, but also to provide instruction on handling emergencies such as severe burn treatment or flood management. This proactive approach is aimed at mitigating the impact of potential disasters.
Lastly, the aid organisation can now intervene in politically unstable regions, provided sufficient security guarantees are in place, increasing its potential scope for assisting.
