An 18-year-old man from Farciennes (just west of Charleroi) was fatally shot on Friday afternoon in Elio Ivan Park, Charleroi, in an alleged theft. Two individuals have been taken into custody.
The Charleroi Prosecutor’s Office confirmed that the suspects were detained at the crime scene. “They were apprehended based on initial witness accounts and clothing descriptions,” said Sandrine Vairon, the divisional prosecutor in Charleroi.
Police carried out a search at the incident location and further searches are currently underway at the homes of the suspects. Preliminary investigations lead the judicial authority to believe this is a case of robbery-motivated murder. “Something appears to have been stolen from the victim which is currently being sought after in the ongoing searches,” investigators said.
The incident took place at around 13:00 on Friday. Early reports indicate that one suspect was born in 1994. The other is thought to be over 60.
Residents of the area told local media that it is not uncommon to hear gunshots or even explosions.
