Belgian soldiers injured in bar brawl in Portugal

Five Belgian soldiers were injured in a brawl in Portugal while on mission.

News from the Belgian Defence Press Service, corroborating local media reports, detailed an incident that happened recently. A Belgian unit, present in Portugal for training exercises, was involved in a clash at a bar in Beja.

The five soldiers sustained injuries but are now in stable condition.

An investigation has been initiated by the Belgian military police and Portuguese authorities. No further comments were made by the Defence Press Service.

According to Portuguese newspaper Lidador Noticias, the injured, comprising four men and a woman, range in age from 27 to 53. Allegedly, they were assaulted with bladed weapons.

Beja, the location of the clash, is approximately 170 kilometres south of Lisbon in the Alentejo region and is home to a military airbase.
