A man was pulled from a canal in Laeken’s Jules Detrooz square on Tuesday morning, as confirmed by the Brussels-Capital/Ixelles police zone.

Emergency services were alerted around 09:30 by a boat from the Brussels Port Harbourmaster’s Office after spotting an individual floating in the canal.

The man had his arms and legs bound with chains and padlocks and was carrying a weighted backpack, according to reports from Sudinfo. Rescue services retrieved the man, believed to be in his thirties.

Efforts were made to resuscitate him before he was rushed to the hospital. His condition upon arrival was critical, and he sadly passed away shortly after admission.
