A statue titled 'Manneken Peace' was unveiled on Wednesday opposite the famous Manneken Pis in the heart of Brussels.

The action, organised by Wapa International, aims to denounce the recruitment of children in armed conflicts on International Day Against the Use of Child Soldiers, also known as Red Hand Day (12 February).

The sculpture by Alix Le Clercq depicts a seven-year-old child soldier in military uniform, vulnerable and barefoot, carrying a weapon far too large for him.

It represents an "intolerable reality" and is a reminder that 300,000 children are still enlisted in armed conflicts, noted Wapa International.

"The first thing we notice is the child, vulnerable, fragile and scared, scarred by the horrors of war," the association described. "His bare feet show that he is not equipped, either physically or psychologically, to fight."

The organisation emphasised that this action is not just a tribute but primarily a call to action.

Wapa International aims to ensure that by 2030, at least 80% of demobilised child soldiers benefit from long-term reintegration.

The association fights against the recruitment and use of child soldiers by supporting their demobilisation and reintegration. It works alongside partners to rebuild communities capable of protecting these children and providing education for a better future.
