All metro traffic in the Brussels-Capital Region was at a complete standstill on Tuesday morning due to a spontaneous staff action by metro drivers of public transport operator STIB/MIVB. Traffic has now resumed.
After a brief interruption of metro lines 2 and 6 on Tuesday morning, all metro traffic was at a complete standstill. Metro drivers spontaneously refused to work for an hour on Tuesday morning.
"As of 11:15, traffic has resumed. However, it will still take some time before all lines are running as normal again," Laurent Vermeersch, spokesperson for STIB/MIVB, told The Brussels Times.
As the spontaneous strike was not union-led, the operator had not been made aware of the action. As a result, STIB/MIVB could not warn passengers of the disrupted service.
"It has to do with technical issues and staff security, including in the context of the violence that took place in the metro following the Cup final between Club Brugge and RSC Anderlecht two weekends ago and how that was handled by STIB," he said.
This story was updated at 11:30 after metro traffic resumed.
