Four Brussels universities and hospitals have joined forces to advance research collaboration on one of the deadliest forms of cancer.

The just formed Brussels Pancreatic Cancer Team (BruPaCT) links the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB), UZ Brussel, and Erasme Hospital/Institut Jules Bordet.

Pancreatic cancer remains one of the deadliest forms of the disease, with a five-year survival rate that has shown little improvement in recent decades.

By integrating research efforts and sharing resources, BruPaCT aims to accelerate the development of new treatments and strategies.

Professor Ilse Rooman, BruPaCT’s leader at VUB, emphasised the importance of understanding the fundamental biology of both healthy and tumorous pancreatic tissues. “Given the significant needs of patients, it is essential to think bigger and act faster,” she said. “It would be a shame not to pool our knowledge and resources.”

VUB Professor Dr Nouredin Messaoudi expressed a desire to make a significant impact in pancreatic cancer research with a “long-term commitment,” by combining AI-based predictive models with advanced molecular profiling to advance personalised cancer treatment.

The collaboration between the four institutions is anticipated to ease the exchange of data, samples, and insights.

BruPaCT's focus is on key areas in the fight against pancreatic cancer: tumour initiation and progression, tissue and tumour profiling, innovative treatments, surgical advancements, and early detection programmes.

By sharing resources, BruPaCT partners stand to enhance their ability to secure research funding and foster international collaboration.

“Brussels thus strengthens its leadership role in Belgian pancreatic cancer research,” the institutions stated.
