The Van Meenen Square in Saint-Gilles was adorned in yellow and blue ahead of Union Saint-Gilloise’s decisive championship football match against La Gantoise, which kicks off at 18:30 at the Marien Stadium, with a giant screen set up for fans to watch the crucial encounter.

“We hope Union wins; it would be a first since 1935 and a chance for a grand celebration,” shared the mayor, Jean Spinette (PS). If victorious, the players will greet the crowd from the town hall balcony, “just like in Brussels.”

From around 14:00, fans — young and old — flocked to the square in droves. A fair-like atmosphere emerged, enlivened by food trucks from the Monday market, specially present on this Sunday.

In Saint-Gilles, terraces overflowed while chants from the supporters resonated, sometimes timidly, sometimes loudly.

“Everything seems in place for the team, but it’s been like this for three years, and we keep losing in the end,” remarked Pierre, with his cap firmly on.

This cautious optimism is widespread among fans. Everyone hopes for victory without daring to believe it too much. Some are anxious: “They’re not going to let us down, are they?” asks Patrick. Meanwhile, others brim with confidence: “We’re going to do it, they’re going to do it!”

Union could clinch its 12th Belgian championship title this Sunday, 90 years after its last. A win would suffice. However, a draw or loss would still be favourable provided Bruges does not win.

If crowned champions, the players will arrive at the town hall around 22:30 to present the trophy from the balcony. The local authority may close access to the square if the crowd becomes too large.
