A person died on Wednesday morning after becoming trapped in a metal shutter at the Anneessens pre-metro station in central Brussels.

The incident occurred around 4:30 as the automatic shutters were opening, according to the transport company Stib, which confirmed the news initially reported by Flemish media outlet Bruzz.

Stib indicated that the victim was either attempting to enter or exit the station at that time. Despite the swift arrival of emergency services, the individual was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Brussels prosecutor’s office has declined to comment at this stage.

Stib reminded the public that stations are equipped with visual and auditory warning systems, including flashing lights, sound signals, and information boards, to indicate opening times.

Similar incidents have happened before; in 2023, a person lost their life at the Rogier station.
