On Thursday morning in Schaerbeek, a single individual was injured, but not by gunfire, as confirmed by the Brussels prosecutor’s office on Friday.

Initial confusion arose because the firefighters’ call mentioned different street names from those where the incident occurred. This person was likely involved in a brawl on Avenue Chazal, according to the public prosecutor. No second injured person has been found.

The altercation happened shortly after 7:00 at the intersection of Rue Auguste Lambiotte and Avenue Chazal in Schaerbeek. Gunshots were heard, according to Katlien Breugelmans, spokesperson for the Brussels-North police zone (Schaerbeek/Saint-Josse-ten-Noode/Evere).

A person initially reported as being shot in the head was attended to by emergency services. Medical examinations later revealed no gunshot wounds, and the person’s life is no longer in danger.

The perpetrator fled the scene. The Brussels prosecutor’s office was informed, and an investigation has been launched. Police are currently conducting inquiries to identify the suspect(s) and determine the exact circumstances of the incident.

Early confusion resulted from two separate reports: one about the Avenue Chazal brawl via police channels and another from firefighters initially reporting a gunshot victim in a different street. The prosecutor clarified that it was the same injured person, and the possibility of them being shot has been ruled out.
