The sixth edition of the Bright Brussels festival closed this Sunday evening after being attended by around 300,000 people, the regional tourism agency Visit.brussels announced early Sunday evening.

The official estimation is based, among other things, on the mobile phones that were reported in the vicinity of the 23 light installations since Thursday, when the event was launched.

In addition to the light installations by national and international artists in the European, Royal and Flagey districts, night-time visits to museums and guided tours were offered via an "OFF programme". This year was the first time that the Flagey district was highlighted as part of the Bright Brussels festival.

Several iconic venues such as the façade of the Maison de la Radio and the Abbey of La Cambre were illuminated. The interior of the Notre-Dame church also hosted an artistic work composed of suspended lights.

Another new feature in this year's festival was the Sibelga Light Market in the Brussels Park, with a workshop for repairing damaged lighting for free. A second-hand light market consisted of close to 400 fixtures which were on display throughout the festival and available for purchase on Sunday.

Visit.brussels claims that the festival was carbon neutral for the second year running, with particular attention paid to sustainability. An external audit was launched this year to obtain a complete environmental assessment of the festival and to see how it can be improved.

Bright Brussels will return next year, from 9 to 12 February.
