The father of former Belgium and Manchester City football star Vincent Kompany announced he was quitting as the only black mayor in Brussels on Wednesday.

Pierre Kompany told Le Soir daily he was standing down from his post in Ganshoren, one of the 19 city municipalities, under a cross-party deal to hand over his mandate mid-term.

He was quoted as saying: "There will be other black mayors."

Kompany remains an elected deputy in the regional Brussels parliament. His son Vincent now manages local team Anderlecht who, after a difficult start to the season, sit fourth in the Belgian league.
