A fire in the bin of an underground carpark in Ixelles forced the evacuation of approximately 20 residents on Thursday evening.

The Brussels Fire Brigade were called to Rue Godecharles in the municipality of Ixelles around 22:00 to put out a fire.

When they arrived at the scene, emergency services discovered the source of the fire: a bin in the underground car park of a three-story building.

"The garage door had to be broken open because there was no direct access (to the fire)," Walter Derieuw, a Brussels Fire Brigade spokesperson, told Belga News Agency.

"As the smoke had spread into some of the buildings, the police and fire services had to evacuate 20 residents. However, no one was injured or intoxicated," he added.

Furthermore, no damage was caused to the building, but the fire department had to ventilate it for a long time and check for the presence of carbon monoxide before allowing the 20 evacuated residents to return home.
