Brussels Airport is getting back to its pre-Covid-19 traffic. In September, 2,002,540 passengers passed through the airport, which amounts to 80% of the number of passengers in September 2019.

After July and August, September is the third consecutive month with over two million passengers, the airport announced on Friday.

The uptick is in part due to the large amounts of travellers from the Netherlands who opted for Brussels Airport to avoid the crowds and long queues at Dutch airports.

The total number of flights increased by 22% in September 2022 compared to September 2021, with a total of 17,377 flights. The number of passenger flights is at 75% of the number of passenger flights in September 2019.

Warmer destinations preferred

The average number of passengers per flight remains high, averaging 142 passengers per flight, compared to 132 in 2019.

Despite the energy crisis and cost of living crises, people are flocking towards warmer destinations. Spain, Italy and Turkey were the most popular destinations. These were followed by Germany, Greece, Portugal, the United States, France, Morocco and the United Kingdom.
