The Brussels fire brigade discovered a small snake in the cellar of a building on the Chaussée d’Anvers in Brussels at around 6pm on Thursday.

The snake has been entrusted to a specialised shelter.

“The animal was placed in a box measuring 12 centimetres by 12 centimetres and entrusted to the care of the Royal Belgian League for the Protection of Birds (LRBPO), which also takes care of wild and exotic animals,” Walter Derieuw, spokesman for the Brussels fire brigade, said on Friday.

“It is a corn snake. The reptile is probably a survivor of the trade in exotic animals previously located at this address,” he said.
