The Brussels Fire Brigade has launched a campaign to encourage more people to join its ranks, in particular appealing to women and residents of Brussels.
The Brigade is especially eager for applicants willing to drive fire service ambulances. There are 24 vacancies for the position, “over 80% of which involves urgent transport of the sick or injured,” according to the job description.
Applicants must be open to participating in a wide range of interventions, such as freeing persons trapped in a vehicle or lift, pumping out flooded basements or neutralising hydrocarbons and even destroying wasp nests.

Applicants must be prepared to take part in risky operations. In addition to firefighting, these include emergency responses to explosions, detonations, collapses, interventions in the event of gas leaks or chemical leaks, floods, natural disasters or technological disasters.
Prospective firefighter-paramedics must hold a federal aptitude certificate (FGA). They also need to be stress-resistant and able to work in groups.
A knowledge of French is a plus.
