A road to the north of Brussels was closed on Thursday morning due to a road collapse, the Brussels Fire Brigade reported on Thursday. It has been disrupting traffic since the morning.

Part of the quay wall on the side of the Quai Léon Monnoyer, to the northeast of the Royal Park of Laeken, located by the canal, collapsed, causing road subsidence. This was reported by the Brussels Fire Brigade on Thursday. A lighting pole also sagged slightly due to the incident.

The exact cause of the road subsidence is still unclear.

Advised to avoid road

Initially, the incident closed the Quai des Usines to traffic in both directions between Place Jules de Trooz and the Van Praet Bridge, Brussels Mobility reported on social media.

At Place Jules de Trooz, traffic is diverted towards Avenue de la Reine and Allée Verte on the other side of the canal facing Tour&Taxis.

This was causing traffic jams, so the traffic lights have been adapted here to allow traffic to pass more smoothly. Tram traffic is not affected by the incident.

The Quai des Usines remains restricted to local traffic, between the Place Jules de Trooz and the Rue du Rupel. "We advise motorists in transit to avoid this road," the agency concluded.

Navigation on the Brussels-Scheldt Canal is also suspended until it becomes clear whether there is any danger of the quay wall sinking further into the canal.
