Police of the Brussels North zone responded to a shooting incident on Dr Ellie Lambotte street in Schaerbeek late Saturday evening. Upon arriving at the scene, emergency services discovered one victim with a leg injury, according to a statement from the Brussels public prosecutor’s office.

"Emergency services found on victim injured on the right leg. He has been transferred to hospital to receive treatment and his life is not in danger," the police stated.

The deputy public prosecutor, alerted to the incident, has launched a preliminary investigation. The federal judicial police’s forensic lab, a ballistics expert and a forensic doctor are also on the case.

An eye witness contacted by Bruzz said they had heard explosions and "saw two boys from my window. One was injured in the leg. It seemed they were looking for something in one of the cars parked on the street."

It is not yet clear whether Saturday’s shooting is connected to the recent spate of firearms incidents in Brussels. As the investigation continues, the prosecutor’s office will refrain from further commentary on the matter to protect its integrity.
