The 'Winter Garden' greenhouse of the Royal Greenhouses in Laeken and its surroundings will be restored from next year. Last month, the Buildings Agency published the public contract to find a company to carry out the works.

As the Royal Greenhouses are soon opening to the public for several weeks again, the authorities are looking to restore part of the historical site in the near future. Under the largest dome in the complex, the Winter Garden is known for its tree ferns.

"Preserving our architectural heritage and protecting vegetation is a key commitment for me. The restoration of the royal greenhouse 'Winter Garden' in Laeken illustrates this commitment to our history and culture," said State Secretary Mathieu Michel.

"This restoration is an opportunity to preserve our country's architectural heritage for future generations. I am very happy and encourage qualified companies to bid for this public contract and contribute to the preservation of this national treasure," he said.

The 'Winter Garden' greenhouse was built between 1874 and 1876 by architect Alphonse Balat at the order of Leopold II and was the first of the impressive glass complexes that would be erected on the Laeken estate. It is used for royal receptions.

It is surmounted by a glass crown about 25 metres high and with a diameter of 57 metres. The metal skeleton includes 36 visible arches resting on a Doric colonnade. The restoration project covers not only the restoration of the central part, but also the two annexes and the surrounding area.

During the works, the plants present in the greenhouses will be protected and the necessary temperature, climate and humidity will be maintained. Sufficient natural light for the plants will also be ensured, without the risk of burning the plants in summer.

Open to the public

Every year in spring, the royal greenhouses in Laeken are open to the public for several weeks. This year, they will be opened from 26 April to 20 May. More info can be found here.

From 2025, the 'Winter Garden' greenhouse will not be accessible to visitors during its restoration works, and the route will be adjusted accordingly. Qualified contractors who are interested in the project can find more information and submit a tender for the contract on the e-Procurement platform by 4 June 2024.
