The third phase of major works in the north of Brussels started on Saturday at the Gros Tilleul roundabout. For two weeks, the bridges will be closed, which will likely cause significant disruption.

From 27 April to 12 May, the bridges on the A12 at the Gros Tilleul roundabout, connecting the A12 with the Avenue Van Praet, will be closed as part of the ongoing works on the Avenue des Croix du Feu, Brussels Mobility confirmed. Saturday marked the third phase of the work.

Roadworks with major disruption on the A12 over the Gros Tilleul roundabout are taking place," the agency wrote on its website. "This comprises complete closure of the roads in the middle of the roundabout and diversions via the local road from the roundabout."

The work is taking place in a relatively short period of two weeks to limit the hindrance caused. "From 13 May, motorists will be able to drive straight onto the A12 from Van Praetlaan, without having to detour via Avenue de l'Araucaria and Avenue des Croix du Feu.

The reconstruction of the 3-kilometre section of the central ring road (R21) aims to turn it into an urban boulevard, integrating the major traffic artery into the urban fabric. Once finalised, it should improve the quality of life of residents while increasing road safety and encouraging soft mobility without limiting accessibility.

Between September and December 2023, works were carried out to allow two-way traffic on Avenue Van Praet between the newly constructed roundabout and Avenue de l'Araucaria, eliminating the need for through traffic to pass through Avenue des Croix du Feu, to the east of the Parc de Laeken.

From May 2024, works will continue between Avenue de l'Araucaria and the Gros Tilleul roundabout, allowing motorists to enter the A12 without passing through Avenue des Croix du Feu.

Once these works are completed, the final phase of the project will start, namely the construction of green spaces, playgrounds, sports and recreation areas in the neighbourhood. "These works do not affect traffic," Brussels Mobility noted.
