2,000 traditional Belgian meals were served on Place du Jeu de Balles on Sunday as part of Belgian National Day celebrations.
The main square in Marolles was transformed from a large dancefloor on Saturday evening into an enormous restaurant on Sunday. The night before, around 15,000 people attended the Bal National, one of the main events marking Belgium's National Day in Brussels, which rolls around on 21 July every year.
The next day, 2,000 meals were served as part of the festivities, with the menu sold out ahead of time. 250 of these plates were served to underprivileged people living in the area as part of the tout le monde à table ("everyone at the table") initiative which allowed people to grab a plate for just €1.
Moules frites were enjoyed in abundance - 2,800 kilograms of mussels were prepared, according to non-profit Bal National. Diners also had a taste of vegetarian vol-au-vents, karaoke, majorettes and brass bands.
