Belgium's first ever healthcare centre dedicated to LGBTQ+ individuals opened its doors in Brussels on Monday.

The Maison Arc-en-Ciel de la Santé (MACS) opened in Brussels on Monday. Located at 20 Rue des Grands Carmes, MACS aims to provide high-quality medical care in an environment respectful of all gender identities, sexual preferences and sex characteristics.

The centre is accredited by the French Community Commission (COCOF). With the support of organisations Ex Aequo, Genres Pluriels and Tels Quels, its ethos is to offer a welcoming, appropriate and non-discriminatory atmosphere for all patients.

"MACS will be open to everyone but will concentrate efforts on meeting the specific health and reception needs of LGBTQ+ individuals," the centre stated.

At-risk group

Numerous studies show that LGBTQ+ individuals tend to be in poorer health compared to the general population. Lack of open communication about their lifestyle with medical professionals can hinder the observation of certain symptoms, leading to late diagnoses and more severe health issues.

In addition to comprehensive general medical care, the new health centre offers psycho- and sexotherapy consultations, STI screenings and referrals to LGBTQ+ friendly professionals. MACS is also committed to training medical and paramedical staff on the specific needs of marginalised communities.

Appointments can be made through the website www.macs.brussels or by phone at 02/372.01.22.
