Metro traffic in Brussels on lines 2 and 6 – which had been interrupted since Monday afternoon following an incident involving a metro carriage – was able to resume on Tuesday morning, but is now interrupted again.

Traffic on lines 2 and 6 is interrupted between the Simonis and Delacroix stops due to a problem with a defective switch, announced the Brussels public transport operator STIB/MIVB.

Traffic on lines 1 and 5 was also briefly interrupted due to a person on the train tracks, but service has since been restored.

What happened on Monday?

On Monday, shortly after 13:00, traffic on metro lines 2 and 6 was disrupted due to smoke on a metro carriage travelling between the Clemenceau and Delacroix metro stations.

The passengers of the affected metro carriage were evacuated via Delacroix station. Emergency services arrived at the scene in large numbers to extinguish the small fire and administered necessary care to three STIB/MIV technicians at the scene. Five passengers had inhaled smoke and were taken to hospital.

According to the fire service, it was a small electrical fire on the underside of the metro carriage, but the exact cause is still unclear.

Due to the incident, traffic on lines 2 and 6 was interrupted all evening between the Porte de Hal and Osseghem stops to carry out repairs. At 04:00 on Tuesday morning, the metros were able to resume running on both lines. However, a new problem has now occurred with a faulty switch.
