A temporary flower garden will be created at Brussels' Rogier metro station between 11:00 and 14:00 on Monday. The initiative aims to encourage residents to discover the world of composting.

Around one in ten residents in Brussels already have an individual compost system, while there are 218 collective composting sites in the Brussels region. Composting offers free, natural fertiliser, while also reducing waste as around 40-60% of bin content is organic material.

Monday's action aims to raise awareness of waste management options while encouraging residents to engage with nature.

During the initiative, free honey and lettuce plants will be distributed to commuters by the organisers, the Worms organisation and the regional environmental agency Brussels Environment. The plants are cultivated by a local farmer-florist from Anderlecht.

The action is taking place days ahead of the 'Compost Days' events, happening on 17 and 18 May.

Saturday's schedule features the 'Compost Festival' in Saint-Gilles, where compost and gardening experts will offer advice on generating quality compost and building vegetable gardens. Experts from Brussels Environment will discuss the strategy for sustainable soil management.

On Sunday, some 30 collective and neighbourhood compost sites across the region will open their doors to the public. There will also be four educational walks for residents to participate in.
