Construction of 'cycle highway' between Anderlecht and Brussels launchedConstruction began on the 6.5-kilometre "cycle highway" between the municipalities of Anderlecht and Brussels City this month, reports Beliris, which carries out construction projects in the Capital Region.

The C223 cycle route will connect Bockstael (Laeken) with the former Cureghem station (Anderlecht) along railway line 28, which runs between Schaerbeek station and Brussels-Midi.

The cycle and walking path crosses five municipalities: the City of Brussels, Jette, Koekelberg, Molenbeek and Anderlecht. The project is part of a wider network of cycle highways that connects to other cycle routes in the country, according to Beliris.

Between the Belgica and Simonis stations, Rue Serkeyn will undergo a complete makeover, with wider footpaths, a two-way cycle path and a meeting place with a speed limit of 20 km/h. Around 40 trees will also be planted, and a green space with play and sports facilities will be created. Rue Gemba & Rue Gisèle Halimi will then be redesigned as bicycle zones.

Major step forward

On the section between Gare du Ouest and Jacques Brel, a separate cycle path will be constructed on part of Chaussée de Ninove. Rue Verheyden will become a bicycle zone, while Boulevard Graindor will have a safe crossing to Rue de Glasgow.

Finally, at the L28 park, north of the new Tour & Taxis district, gentle slopes will be created at the entrances to Rue Tielemans and Boulevard Belgica.

"These developments represent a major step forward for active mobility in Brussels," according to a press release. "By making it easier to get around by bike and on foot thanks to adapted infrastructure, Beliris is contributing to a more sustainable, accessible and liveable city."

The three projects are expected to be completed in the winter of 2026. The budget of just under €1 million is being financed by a subsidy from the European recovery plan.
