A man was shot dead at around 20:30 on Sunday on Avenue d'Itterbeek in Anderlecht, according to information from Sudinfo and Het Laatste Nieuws confirmed by the Brussels-Midi police zone. The shooter has been apprehended.
The incident is not believed to be related to drug trafficking, but rather to an altercation between the victim, a café manager, and his tenant, Belga News Agency reported. The latter fired several shots, injuring his landlord, who died in the hospital.
Local police cordoned off the area for the investigation on Sunday night.
Molenbeek shooting over weekend
Shots were also fired on Rue de l'Ecole in Molenbeek-Saint-Jean on Saturday afternoon, according to information from the newspaper Het Laatste Nieuws confirmed by the Brussels-West police zone. One person was injured. The police were able to apprehend two suspects.
The police were alerted at around 15:45 to shots fired on Rue de l'Ecole. "On arrival, our teams were able to apprehend two potential suspects. One of them was injured and taken to hospital," said the police zone. The police then set up a security perimeter.
Over 20 shootings in one summer
Brussels is on the verge of a record year for gun violence, with nearly 60 since the start of 2025 and over 20 shootings this summer alone.
Sunday's altercation was relatively rare, as most of the incidents have been linked to the drug environment, but marks the third death this summer.
Last week, Brussels Public Prosecutor Julien Moinil spoke of an "alarming trend."
"Brussels must be a livable and, above all, safe environment for its residents, for people who come to work here, for tourists, and so on. People should not be afraid to live, work, or even drive in Brussels," he said.
