Police capture Brussels 'Bonnie & Clyde' after spree of armed robberies
A string of seven 'violent' armed robberies, missing only a gas station and (fortunately, the not-so-Hollywood ending) inescapably harks back to the tale of Depression-era America's infamous crime sweethearts

Brussels prosecutors said on Monday they had put an end to a spree of seven armed robberies around the New Year carried out by a man and woman echoing the infamous American bandit couple.

Police from the Uccle and Auderghem precincts in the Belgian capital arrested a 23-year-old man and a 20-year-old woman after exercising search warrants issued by a magistrate, a statement said.

Cops were hunting the perpetrators of a series of raids targeting jewellers and grocery stores stretching from the central district of Ixelles to Waterloo on the main artery out to the south of the city.

The pair were taken into custody on Monday, charged with a wide set of aggravated and "violent" armed robbery offences committed at night and in broad daylight pending their trial.

'Nice try,' smirks Uccle officer...

Quizzed by The Brussels Times for more details on the case, an Uccle Police official who could not be named insisted that no further details as to the couple's identity or the loot and damage caused during the robberies could be given out.

"Nice try, but you can hardly expect us to give out details of an ongoing judicial matter just because the case has obviously caught the imagination of some among the press," this officer smirked.
