The municipality of Ixelles has opened a condolence register in memory of Jaswinder Singh, the 67-year-old nightshop owner who died during a violent robbery at his business earlier this week.
The initiative aims to allow residents and local shopkeepers to express their support for the victim’s family following a crime that has deeply shocked the neighbourhood.
Several perpetrators entered the shop during the night. The shop owner died during the attack and his wife was reportedly locked in the cellar.

According to initial reports, the woman managed to free herself and discovered her husband’s body before alerting emergency services. The investigation was subsequently entrusted to the Brussels Federal Judicial Police, who are working to identify and apprehend those responsible.
In response to the tragedy, the Municipality of Ixelles decided, in agreement with the victim’s family, to open a condolence register to collect messages of support.
“This was an attack of unimaginable violence. We stand in full solidarity with the shopkeepers who were targeted,” said Ixelles Mayor Romain De Reusme (PS). “Unfortunately, Mr Singh died as a result. It is absolutely tragic. The violence suffered by his wife is also unprecedented.”
The mayor stressed that the couple were well-known figures in their neighbourhood and had received many messages of support from local residents. “They have a strong network and many people have already shared with me their desire to show their support,” he added.
The condolence register is available at Ixelles municipal offices, at the entrance to the Council Chamber, located at 168 Chaussée d’Ixelles. It can be signed from Monday to Friday between 07:30 and 17:00. During school holidays, access is available from 08:00 am to 16:00.
The register will be handed over to the victim’s family after the Ixelles Municipal Council meeting on 17 September, allowing councillors to also express their condolences. “All my thoughts go out to Mr Singh’s family, his wife, his children and their loved ones,” said Romain De Reusme.
The investigation into the robbery and the circumstances surrounding Jaswinder Singh’s death remains ongoing.
