The Socialist Party PS called on Monday for a joint meeting of the Federal Interior and Justice committees to question Federal Ministers Bernard Quintin (MR) and Annelies Verlinden (CD&V) following a recent shootings in Anderlecht and Saint-Gilles.
The opposition party said the succession of shootings in recent days, including one targeting a police station, was unacceptable and required a strong response from the authorities to dismantle the criminal networks involved.
PS MP Ridouane Chahid said the entire security chain needed to be rethought, strengthened and properly funded.
He called for tighter customs checks at the Port of Antwerp, which he described as Europe’s gateway for drugs, as well as measures to stop drug barons from ordering shootings from their prison cells.
He also urged the authorities to increase the number of investigators and police officers dealing with organised crime.
According to Chahid, the current response falls short. He said that despite the hard work of police officers on the ground and local mayors, there are still insufficient resources to combat criminal networks that are becoming ever more organised and violent.
