The possibility of building a new football stadium for Royale Union Saint-Gilloise close to Bempt in Forest — and not far from the Audi Forest site — is still being analysed and studied.

The club now needs to respond to a series of mobility questions from the commune, the Secretary of State for Urbanism, Pascal Smet said on Friday, according to reports from Belga News Agency.

“It goes without saying that we need to facilitate the project of a private investor who is ready to invest €60 to 70 million in a stadium without any money coming from the public sector,” Smet said.

Francophone liberal party Mouvement Réformateur (MR) parliamentarian for Anderlecht, Gaëtan Van Goidsenhoven, was no less enthusiastic about the importance of the project for the Brussels club, which stopped just short of winning the Belgian championship title at the end of an impressive season.

“I hope autumn will not mean falling leaves for Union, but a new spring for a club that has made us proud during a year of sport and conviviality,” he commented. The team’s current stadium is the Joseph Marien Stadium, located within Duden Park in the municipality of Forest in Brussels.
