On Tuesday, 21-year old Steven VG. was released by the Ghent court. Steven VG, from Leuven, was in jail for four months for his alleged involvement in a fatal knife attack on the Grand Place de Bruges. On Friday, May 30th, 19 year old Mikey Peeters was the victim of a knife attack committed by two men shortly before 5:00AM. He died a few hours later at the hospital. One of the suspects, Steven VG, turned himself in to the authorities the night following the attack. His alleged accomplice, Suleyman B., fled to Chechnya.

Lawyers for Steven VG built their defense mainly on the images of surveillance cameras that captured the assault. According to the images, the young man played a minor role in the attack. The Council Chamber had decided to release the young man on three separate occasions but prosecutors continuously appealed that decision. The court finally decided to release him on parole.
