Brussels: 150 evacuated after gas leak in Rue Royale

A hundred and fifty people were evacuated on Wednesday morning after a gas leak was found in Rue Royal, said Pierre Meys, spokesperson for Brussels fire department. Rue Royale was partially closed to traffic between the Monument to the Unknown Soldier and Rue de la Loi.

The gas leak came from number 18 Rue Royale, Brussels, at around 8.40am and was caused by a crack in a low pressure gas pipe.  A hundred and fifty people in the buildings around the area were evacuated and the road was partially closed to tramways and all other traffic.

A Brussels fire department spokesperson said the leak has already been partially capped. Repairing the breach is proving a little difficult as the pipe is encased in concrete but it is expected to be finished before noon today.
