Fireworks in Brussels - the Brussels pyrotechnic show rejected by the fire department

The Brussels fire department is not in favour of the New Year firework display planned for the Place De Brouckère in Brussels town center. According to them, the area is too dense and it would be very risky, Le Soir and the Sudpresse newspapers reported on Tuesday. Firemen inspected the roofs that the fireworks will be fired from, and decided it was too dangerous. There are too many inhabited buildings around, and if sparks fell on them and caused an incident, the situation would be critical.

The town of Brussels and the BME (Brussels Major Event) have nevertheless decided to hold the event there.

“The fire department has not said no, but simply expressed a few concerns”, said Olivier Mees, president of the BME.

The firemen on the night shift New Year’s Eve will be on standby in any case.
