Shooting near the Saint-Jean Berchmans School – a man arrested

The man who tried to mow down police officers with his car on Friday, in the rue des Ursulines in Brussels, was taken into custody on Saturday. He appeared before the Prosecutor’s office magistrate on Sunday. The officers shot at the car when it was used to try and attack them near the Saint-Jean Berchmans School, which Princess Elizabeth attends. The shots were fired at around 3pm. No-one was injured.

The owners of the car contacted Brussels-West police at around 4.30pm. They said a friend had borrowed their car and handed it back with several bullet holes. They said he claimed to have been attacked by fake policemen near the Midi station.

This information allowed police to track the suspect down on Saturday. He appeared before the Prosecutor’s office on Sunday. Analysis of the images recorded by CCTV cameras confirms the story told by the officers involved. They said the man drove towards them at high speed.
